(AHN) - Head Honchos at Google Inc. thought it would be funny to pull an elaborate prank on their customers for April Fools Day telling them they could get free Internet access through their toilet.
Google's "Toilet Internet Service Provider" (TiSP) came complete with a mock press release, FAQs, and a step-by-step online installation manual. The release said access is "free to any consumer with a WiFi-capable PC and a toilet connected to a local municipal sewage system."
The press release quoted Google Co-founder and President Larry Page saying, "We've got that whole organizing-the-world's-information thing more or less under control. What's interesting, though, is how many different modalities there are for actually getting that information to you - not to mention from you."
Instructions labeled, "TiSP: Going with the Flow" feature a TiSP installation kit and tell consumers how to fasten the Internet cable to a sinker and flush it down. The instructions say the consumer should be online within 60 minutes.
These kinds of pranks go all year long within Google's California headquarters. According to reports employees have done things like dye the cafeteria milk green and cover the vice president of engineering's office floor with sand.
Eric Raymond, a software developer in Malvern, Pa., and author of the New Hacker's Dictionary, said, "The leitmotif of hacker humor is precise reasoning from utterly bizarre premises, and once you're in that groove, you're absolutely fearless about going deeper.
